About me and this site

As long as anyone can remember I liked being outdoors in nature. There have been times when I spent less time outdoors because life had other focuses, but the interest never faded away completely. I guess we all experience something similar from time to time.

A couple of years ago, in the autumn of 2018, I found myself having a lot of time on my hands and started to do a short list of things I liked to find a hobby that would check all the boxes,

  • I like to teach, even if I have never been a teacher, just a somewhat adept instructor.

  • I like to cook, even if I never have been a chef, just a somewhat adept home-cook.

  • I like to be outdoors, just for the day or overnighters, any time of the year.

The somewhat surprising, (at least for me), answer to this equation was: “I’m gonna start an outdoor channel on YouTube.”

I’ve had this channel for a couple of years and the cooking part has been what is sparking inspiration with my viewers pretty much all the way. More than once viewers comment that they have tried a recipe or that they will. Looking to myself I find cooking videos excellent for inspiration but rather dreadful to follow when you actually want to try to cook something. Then a cookbook is superior, so an idea took form. Would my viewers have any interest in a “virtual cookbook”, a.k.a. a website with recipes? The answer was yes. So here we go. A cookbook online with recipes you can cook outdoors, at the campfire or with a cookset.

Some recipes are just a product of what ingredients I had at home in the pantry when I decided to cook outdoors, others are classic recipes that I’ve modified for the outdoor kitchen. I have cooked all the dishes so you’ll find a link to the corresponding video below the recipe.

Since I dislike the online recipes where I have to scroll through a novel before I get to the actual recipe I will keep the presentation of them to a minimum. I will instead provide information that I would find useful for planning a cookout, e.g. how much water do you need to bring for cooking and washing up if you don’t have a source of freshwater nearby, or how much fuel you’re likely to use.

I hope you find this site useful and that it can inspire you to cook great meals outdoors, because food tastes better outdoors!
